Cold Weather Safety Tips from the Sound Beach Fire Department

As temperatures drop, the Sound Beach Fire Department would like to remind residents to take a few extra precautions to stay safe during cold weather:

• Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from anything combustible and never leave them unattended.
• Ensure all heating equipment and chimneys are properly maintained and inspected.
• Never use ovens, grills, or generators to heat your home.
• Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and replace batteries as needed.
• Keep fire hydrants clear of snow and ice.
• Check on elderly neighbors and those who may need assistance during extreme cold.
• Dress in layers and limit time outdoors during frigid temperatures.

Taking a few simple steps can help prevent fires, carbon monoxide emergencies, and cold-related injuries.

If you are interested in serving your community, the Sound Beach Fire Department is always looking for new members. Reach out to us for information on how you can help protect your neighbors.

Stay warm and stay safe.
