Thanksgiving Safety Tips
Sound Beach Fire Department
Thanksgiving is a time for family, gratitude, and shared meals. It’s also one of the busiest days of the year for fire departments across the country. The Sound Beach Fire Department urges all residents to take simple precautions to ensure a safe and joyful holiday. Cooking-related fires are the leading cause of home fires on Thanksgiving Day. Stay alert and follow these important safety guidelines.
Cooking Safety
-
Stay in the kitchen: Unattended cooking is the number one cause of kitchen fires. If you leave the kitchen, turn off the stove.
-
Keep children and pets away: Maintain a safe zone of at least three feet around stoves, ovens, and hot surfaces.
-
Watch your heat: Use a timer and check food regularly. Keep flammable materials such as towels, oven mitts, and packaging away from the stovetop.
-
Turn pot handles inward: Prevent accidental spills and burns by ensuring handles are not hanging over the edge of the stove.
-
Wear appropriate clothing: Avoid loose sleeves that can catch fire while cooking.
Turkey Fryer Safety
Deep frying turkeys can be dangerous and is not recommended by many safety organizations. If you choose to use a fryer:
-
Use it outdoors only: Never operate a turkey fryer inside your home, garage, or on a wooden deck.
-
Keep it on a flat, stable surface: Ensure the fryer is away from anything flammable.
-
Never leave it unattended: Keep a close eye on the fryer while in use.
-
Thaw the turkey completely: Water and oil don’t mix—frying a partially frozen turkey can cause a fire or explosion.
Fire Preparedness
-
Test smoke alarms: Make sure your smoke detectors are working on every level of your home, especially near sleeping areas and the kitchen.
-
Have a fire extinguisher on hand: Know how to use it and keep it accessible in the kitchen.
-
Establish an emergency plan: Make sure everyone in your home knows how to evacuate in case of a fire and where to meet outside.
Candle and Decoration Safety
-
Use flameless candles: These are a safer alternative to open flames, especially around children and pets.
-
Keep decorations away from heat sources: Paper, cloth, and dried foliage can ignite easily.
-
Never leave candles unattended: Blow them out when leaving the room or going to bed.
A Safe Holiday Starts with Awareness
