Fire Safety for Kids
Sound Beach Fire Department
Welcome to the Sound Beach Fire Department’s Fire Safety for Kids page! We want to help you and your family stay safe from fires at home, at school, and everywhere you go. Learning about fire safety is fun and important!

Fire Safety Rules for Kids
1. Know the Sound of a Smoke Alarm
- Smoke alarms make a loud “beep, beep, beep” sound.
- If you hear it, get out of the house right away.
- Never hide when you hear the alarm—go outside with your family.
2. Never Play with Fire
- Matches and lighters are not toys.
- If you see matches or a lighter, tell an adult right away.
- Fire can spread quickly, so never play with anything that makes flames.
3. Have a Fire Escape Plan
- Talk to your family about how to get out of your house if there is a fire.
- Pick a meeting place outside where everyone will go.
- Practice your fire drill at least twice a year.
4. Check Doors Before Opening
- If there is smoke, don’t open the door.
- Feel the door with the back of your hand—if it’s hot, don’t open it.
- Use another way out, like a window, if it’s safe.
5. Stop, Drop, and Roll
- If your clothes catch fire:
- STOP running.
- DROP to the ground.
- ROLL over and over to put out the flames.
6. Call 9-1-1 for Help
- If there is a fire or emergency, call 9-1-1.
- Tell the operator your name and address.
- Stay on the phone until help arrives.
