Hurricane Safety & Preparation Guide
Hurricane season is upon us, and experts are predicting another year of potentially severe storms.
The Sound Beach Fire Department urges all residents to take proactive steps to protect their families, homes, and communities.
Essential Hurricane Preparation Tips
1. Build an Emergency Kit
The American Red Cross recommends assembling a well-stocked Disaster Supplies Kit, including:
- First aid kit with essential medications
- Non-perishable food (canned goods, dried foods) and a manual can opener
- Water supply—at least one gallon per person, per day for a minimum of three days
- Protective clothing, rain gear, and sturdy footwear
- Bedding (blankets or sleeping bags)
- Battery-powered radio and flashlight with extra batteries
- Supplies for infants, elderly, or disabled family members (formula, diapers, medical devices)
- Pet supplies, including food, water, and any necessary medications
- Important documents stored in a waterproof container (IDs, insurance policies, emergency contacts)
2. Know How to Shut Off Utilities
Prepare a checklist for turning off electricity, gas, and water if instructed by authorities. Remember: A licensed professional must turn the gas back on.
3. Have an Evacuation Plan
- Identify multiple evacuation routes and shelters in your area.
- Plan where you will go if ordered to evacuate—stay with family, at a hotel, or in an emergency shelter.
- Have a go-bag ready with essentials, including cash, medications, and important documents.
4. Stay Informed
Monitor updates from local emergency management and trusted sources, including:
American Red Cross – Suffolk County
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
Suffolk County Office of Emergency Management
