Halloween Safety Tips from the Sound Beach Fire Department

At the Sound Beach Fire Department, your family's safety is our top priority—especially during holidays when excitement is high and safety risks can increase. Halloween is a time for fun, costumes, and treats, but it’s also a time to stay alert and follow key safety guidelines to ensure a safe night for all.

Costume Safety

  • Choose Flame-Resistant Materials: Ensure all costumes, wigs, and accessories are labeled as flame-resistant or flame-retardant.

  • Use Reflective Elements: Add reflective tape or glow-in-the-dark materials to costumes and trick-or-treat bags to increase visibility.

  • Check Fit and Length: Costumes should be well-fitted to prevent tripping. Avoid overly long or loose clothing that could catch fire or cause falls.

  • Opt for Face Paint Over Masks: Masks can obstruct vision. Non-toxic face paint or makeup is a safer alternative.

Trick-or-Treating Guidelines

  • Adult Supervision: Children under 12 should always be accompanied by an adult. Older children should stay in familiar neighborhoods and carry a cell phone.

  • Stay Visible and Alert: Carry flashlights or glow sticks, and walk on sidewalks or at the edge of the road facing traffic.

  • Use Crosswalks: Cross streets at designated crosswalks or intersections, and never dart out between parked cars.

  • Inspect Treats Before Eating: An adult should examine all treats for choking hazards and signs of tampering before consumption.

Home and Neighborhood Safety

  • Keep Walkways Clear: Remove tripping hazards such as garden hoses, toys, or fallen leaves from sidewalks and porches.

  • Use Flameless Decorations: Opt for battery-operated candles or glow sticks inside jack-o’-lanterns instead of real flames.

  • Secure Pets: Keep pets indoors and away from the front door to prevent accidental escapes or frightening young visitors.

Driving on Halloween

  • Slow Down: Drive below the speed limit in residential areas and stay alert for trick-or-treaters, especially during peak hours between 5:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

  • Turn On Headlights Early: Increase your visibility to pedestrians by using headlights even before it gets dark.

  • Avoid Distractions: Stay focused on the road—put away phones and avoid loud music while driving.

Fire Department Resources

Sound Beach Fire Department personnel will be on alert throughout Halloween to ensure community safety. We encourage residents to report any unsafe behavior or emergencies by calling 911. For non-emergencies or questions about holiday safety, please contact the firehouse directly.
