Flood Safety
Flooding can occur with little warning and poses serious threats to life, property, and infrastructure. The Sound Beach Fire Department encourages residents to stay informed and take proactive steps to protect themselves and their families before, during, and after flood events.
Before a Flood
Stay Informed
Monitor weather forecasts and alerts. Pay attention to local news and emergency notifications from trusted agencies.
Prepare an Emergency Kit
Include essential supplies such as bottled water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, batteries, first aid supplies, medications, and important documents in a waterproof container.
Plan for Evacuation
Know your evacuation routes and discuss a plan with your family. Identify higher ground locations and prepare your vehicle for a quick departure if needed.
Protect Your Home
Elevate electrical systems and major appliances. Clear gutters and storm drains. Consider sandbags or other barriers to direct water away from structures.
During a Flood
Follow Evacuation Orders
If local officials issue an evacuation, leave immediately. Do not wait until it’s too late—delays can put lives at risk.
Avoid Floodwaters
Never walk, swim, or drive through floodwaters. Just six inches of moving water can knock over an adult, and one foot of water can sweep away a vehicle.
Turn Around, Don’t Drown
Do not drive around barricades or attempt to cross flooded roads. Conditions can be more dangerous than they appear.
Seek Higher Ground
Move to the highest accessible area away from rising water. If trapped in a building, go to the upper floors or roof. Do not enter enclosed attic spaces without a way to escape.
After a Flood
Stay Alert
Listen to updates about water safety, road closures, and recovery efforts. Wait for official clearance before returning home.
Avoid Contaminated Water
Floodwaters may carry sewage, chemicals, or debris. Avoid contact and wear protective gear when cleaning.
Inspect Your Home Carefully
Check for structural damage before entering. Look for warping, cracks, or electrical hazards.
Use Caution with Utilities
Do not touch electrical equipment if it is wet or if you are standing in water. Shut off power at the main breaker if safe to do so.
Document Damage
Take photos and keep a written record of any damage to your property for insurance purposes.
