Clothes Dryer Safety: Preventing Fires in Your Home

Clothes dryers are a common household convenience, but without proper maintenance, they can become a serious fire hazard. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, from 2008 to 2010, fire departments responded to an estimated 2,900 clothes dryer fires in residential buildings each year, resulting in an annual average of 5 deaths, 100 injuries, and $35 million in property loss. More recently, data indicates that dryers are responsible for approximately 13,820 fires annually, accounting for 4% of all home structure fires. These fires often result from lint buildup, which can block airflow, cause overheating, and ignite within the dryer or exhaust duct.?

To keep your home safe, follow these essential dryer safety tips:

Routine Maintenance

  • Clean the lint filter before and after every load. Failure to clean the dryer is the leading cause of dryer fires, accounting for approximately 34% of all incidents. ?

  • Inspect and clean the dryer vent and exhaust duct periodically. Ensure exhaust air is flowing freely outside. If air is not escaping, the vent may be blocked and require cleaning.?

  • Clear lint from behind and beneath the dryer. Lint can accumulate in hidden areas, increasing fire risk.?

Professional Inspection & Ventilation

  • Have a qualified technician service your dryer regularly to remove interior lint buildup.?

  • Use rigid or semi-rigid metal ducts instead of flexible plastic or foil ducts, which trap lint more easily and are prone to kinking or crushing.?

Safe Drying Practices

  • Be cautious when drying clothes with flammable residues from gasoline, cooking oils, or chemicals. Wash these items multiple times and air dry when possible.?

  • Use the lowest heat setting and a cool-down cycle if drying chemically soiled clothing.?

  • Avoid leaving dried clothes in the dryer or piled in a laundry basket, as they can retain heat and potentially ignite.?

By taking these simple precautions, you can reduce the risk of a dryer-related fire and help protect your home and family.
