Carbon Monoxide Safety
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas produced by the incomplete combustion of fuels such as gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas, propane, oil, and methane. Exposure to CO can be fatal, as it prevents the body from effectively utilizing oxygen. Common sources include malfunctioning or improperly used fuel-burning appliances, blocked chimneys, and running vehicles in enclosed spaces.
Symptoms of CO Poisoning
CO poisoning can present with symptoms such as:
-
Headaches
-
Dizziness
-
Weakness
-
Nausea or vomiting
-
Chest pain
-
Confusion
Severe exposure can result in loss of consciousness or death. People who are sleeping or intoxicated may not experience symptoms before it's too late.
Prevention Measures
To reduce the risk of CO poisoning, the Sound Beach Fire Department recommends the following:
Install CO Alarms
Regular Maintenance
-
Ensure fuel-burning appliances like furnaces, stoves, water heaters, and fireplaces are installed properly and serviced annually by a qualified professional.
Ensure Proper Ventilation
Use Generators Safely
-
Operate portable generators outdoors, far from windows, doors, and vents to prevent CO from entering the home.
Vehicle Safety
-
Never run vehicles or gas-powered tools in enclosed spaces such as garages, even if doors are open.
-
Clear snow from vehicle exhaust pipes before starting your car during winter.
What to Do If Your CO Alarm Sounds
-
Move everyone immediately to fresh air—either outside or near an open window or door.
-
Call 911 or your local emergency services.
-
Remain outside until responders confirm it is safe to return indoors.
