Candle Safety Tips – Sound Beach Fire Department

Candles can create a warm and inviting atmosphere in your home, but they also pose a serious fire risk if not used properly. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), candles cause thousands of home fires each year. The Sound Beach Fire Department urges residents to follow these important safety guidelines to prevent candle-related fires.

General Candle Safety Tips

  • Never leave candles unattended. Always extinguish candles before leaving a room or going to sleep.
  • Keep candles away from flammable materials. Place candles at least 12 inches from curtains, furniture, bedding, and other items that can catch fire.
  • Use sturdy, heat-resistant candle holders. Ensure the holder is placed on a stable, non-flammable surface.
  • Keep candles out of reach of children and pets. Curious hands and wagging tails can easily knock over a burning candle.
  • Trim the wick. Keep candle wicks trimmed to ¼ inch to prevent excessive flames and soot buildup.
  • Avoid burning candles near drafts. Open windows, ceiling fans, and vents can cause uneven burning and increase the risk of fire.

Safe Alternatives to Candles

For those who enjoy the ambiance of candlelight but want a safer option, consider:

  • Flameless LED candles: These provide the same warm glow without the fire risk.
  • Battery-operated lanterns: A great alternative for mood lighting or emergencies.
  • Wax warmers: These use electricity to melt scented wax without an open flame.

What to Do If a Candle Fire Starts

  • Smother the flames. Use a metal lid or baking soda to extinguish the fire—never use water, as it can cause the fire to spread.
  • Call 9-1-1 immediately. If the fire grows out of control, evacuate your home and call for help.
  • Have working smoke alarms. Ensure your home is equipped with functional smoke alarms on every level and inside bedrooms.

The Sound Beach Fire Department is committed to keeping our community safe. By following these simple precautions, you can enjoy candles while reducing the risk of fire. If you have any questions about fire safety, please contact us at [insert contact information].
