BBQ Safety Guide

Grilling is a favorite pastime for many, but it also comes with fire and burn risks. Follow these safety guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable barbecue experience.

Before Barbecuing

Inspect Your Grill

  • Check for leaks, cracks, or brittleness before use.
  • Regularly inspect tubes leading to the burner for blockages. Refer to your grill manufacturer’s instructions for specific maintenance guidelines.

Choose a Safe Location

  • Place the grill at least 10 feet away from houses, garages, decks, or trees.
  • Use grills only on a stable, non-flammable surface like concrete or asphalt.
  • Never grill in enclosed areas such as garages, porches, or under overhangs. Propane grills are prohibited on balconies, terraces, or rooftops due to fire hazards and local regulations.

Prepare for Emergencies

  • Keep a fire extinguisher, garden hose, or a bucket with at least 16 quarts of water nearby.
  • Establish a safety zone around the grill to keep children and pets at a safe distance. A chalk line can serve as a helpful boundary.

Propane Cylinder Safety

  • Inspect propane cylinders for damage before refilling.
  • Never store or transport propane cylinders in the trunk of your car.

During Barbecuing

Stay Fire-Safe

  • Avoid wearing loose clothing that may catch fire.
  • Use long-handled barbecue tools and flame-resistant mitts for added protection.
  • Keep alcoholic beverages away from the grill, as they are flammable.
  • Never leave the grill unattended while in use.

Fuel Safety

  • Use only barbecue starter fluid to ignite charcoal grills. Never use gasoline or other flammable liquids.
  • Never squirt or pour starter fluid onto an open flame—it can cause dangerous flare-ups.

BBQ Safely

Lighting a Propane Grill

  • Open the grill lid.
  • Strike your match or lighter before turning on the gas.
  • Ensure all connections are secure.

After Grilling

  • Shut off the propane at both the grill and the tank to prevent leaks.
  • Store propane cylinders outdoors, away from heat sources.
  • Regularly check for leaks using soapy water or a leak detector, never an open flame.

After Barbecuing

  • Follow manufacturer guidelines for cleaning and storage.
  • Keep your grill free of grease buildup to prevent fires.
  • Never store propane or liquid fuels inside your home or near heat sources.

In Case of a Barbecue Fire

If using a PROPANE grill:

  • Turn off the burners.
  • If safe, shut off the tank valve.
  • If the fire involves the propane tank, evacuate the area and call 911 immediately.

If using a CHARCOAL grill:

  • Close the grill lid to smother the flames.

If using an ELECTRIC grill:

  • Unplug the power source immediately.

Important Fire Safety Reminders

  • Never use water to extinguish a grease fire—it will cause flames to flare up. Use a Class B fire extinguisher instead.
  • If a fire threatens safety or property, call 911 immediately.

Additional Safety Regulations

  • A maximum of two (2) 20-pound propane tanks is allowed per one- or two-family home.
  • Charcoal barbecues are permitted on balconies and terraces only if there is a 10-foot clearance from the building and an immediate water source (garden hose or a 4-gallon water pail).

By following these safety precautions, you can enjoy outdoor grilling while keeping your home and loved ones safe. Stay safe and happy grilling!
