On Saturday August 23rd our Engine 3 made the trip out to the Nassau County Firefighters Museum & Education Center for the 2nd annual antique fire truck show hosted by the Nassau County Firefighters Association.
We joined dozens of departments from across Nassau and Suffolk Counties at what was a great event for the whole family. Members enjoyed sharing the history of one of our first fire engines with the public and answering questions about the truck.
Engine 3 was purchased new by the department in 1939 for $900. Originally a stock commercial truck (an 'deluxe open express') a siren and pump were soon added by the department in 1940 and 3 served as an engine for 20 years before becoming our generator and flood light truck for another 18 years before going on to become a fire police vehicle in 1978.
By the 1990's members began restoring the Diamond T back to its original condition including repairing the original pump to working condition. To this day 5A-6-3 is lovingly cared for by department members and in addition to serving as a funeral caisson she still attends the local 4th of July and St. Patrick's Day Parades and competes in pumping contests at fire musters.
Thank you to all the members who have cared for 3 over her past 86 years and to the Board of Fire Commissioners for your support! We're proud to be able to share this piece of our history and preserve it for future generations of Sound Beach firefighters.
