| On Friday, December 19th, as Sound Beach experienced high winds and heavy rain, the department was activated at 9:40 AM for a structure fire on Norwich Road.
The first-due engine was advised by Suffolk County FIRECOM that the homeowner had awakened to smoke inside the residence and discovered melted items. Engine 9 arrived on scene to find smoke alarms sounding and a strong odor of something burning. Crews conducted an investigation and determined that a fire had occurred in a room; however, because the door was closed, the fire did not spread to the rest of the home and ultimately burned itself out.
Firefighters opened walls and ceilings to check for any hidden fire extension and confirmed there were no remaining hot spots. This incident clearly demonstrated the importance of sleeping with bedroom doors closed. The scene was later turned over to the Brookhaven Town Fire Marshal for investigation to determine the cause and origin.
Following this response, the department handled numerous additional calls throughout the day, including downed trees and wires burning across the community. Crews also provided mutual aid to the Rocky Point Fire Department for an odor of burning at Webster Bank on Route 25A following a power surge, and later assisted the Wading River Fire Department by standing by with an engine while they operated at a working structure fire.
In total, the Sound Beach Fire Department responded to 10 alarms within a 24-hour period.
