Brush Fire

On Monday, May 30th, the Sound Beach Fire Department honored its deceased members.

Memorial Day, formerly called Decoration Day because its origins stem from the practice of decorating the graves of deceased service men with flags and flowers.  It has evolved to be a day that honors all men and women of all branches of our armed services that have died or are missing in action.  As so many organizations do, we took the opportunity not only to honor United States service men and women but also Sound Beach Firefighters, as well as firefighters throughout America, that are deceased.  Our service included remembrances of those we lost during the past year; Ex-Chief Fred Heemsoth, Ex-Captain Victor Reiter and Past President Peter Sustakovich.  It also included the reading of the names of all our deceased members, the ringing of 13 bells, and the playing of TAPS.  The weather was beautiful for the service; about 40 firefighters and Ladies Auxiliary members, with their families, attended and stayed for refreshments afterward.
