On Monday, May 28th, the Sound
Beach Fire Department honored its deceased members.
Memorial Day, formerly called Decoration Day
because its origins stem from the practice of decorating the graves of
deceased servicemen with flags and flowers. It has evolved to be a day
that honors all men and women of all branches of our armed services that
have died or are missing in action. As so many organizations do, we
took the opportunity not only to honor United States service men and
women but also Sound Beach Firefighters, as well as firefighters
throughout America that are deceased.
Our service included remembrances of all
Sound Beach Fire Department members that have passed away by the reading
of their names, the ringing of 13 bells, and the playing of TAPS and
selected other appropriate music. The Chiefs placed a wreath in front
of the memorial gong.
The weather held out and about 30
firefighters and Ladies Auxiliary members, with their families, attended
and stayed for refreshments afterward. As the Chief said in his opening
remarks, by being at the memorial service “...you are indeed making a
difference. You are not forgetting the sacrifices of our soldiers.” |
