TEAM 2 sets new world record, brings home 2006 Long Island JOLT Championship.
The day was one to be remembered in the history books of the Sound Beach Fire Department. Throughout our 76 year history we have much to be proud of; short of saving a life nothing compares to what happened at Firemens’ Park in Ridge on Saturday.
Three teams from the Sound Beach Fire Department joined forty other teams from New York, Connecticut and Rhode Island competing in the annual Long Island Jaws of Life Tournament or JOLT competition on Sept. 30th. Team 2 from Sound Beach won first place and became the overall champion. Team 2 also broke the record for completing an evolution with a time of 3 minutes, 44 seconds, one minute faster than the previous record. Team 3 from Sound Beach advanced to the semifinals and finished in fourth place.
The competition simulates the extrication of a patient involved in a motor vehicle accident. There are required maneuvers that you must complete in a certain order. You are timed against another team that operates on the opposite side of the car once you have completed your evolution. Our three teams have practiced every Monday since June for this tournament.
Besides the first place trophy SBFD Team 2 won a battery operated set of mini jaws valued at over $9,000 and $4,000 in cash.
Team 1 (Engine Company #1), consisted of Phil Alaimo III, Marc Francois, Jim Hart, Andy Itterly and Mike Rosasco. Team 2 (Engine Company #2), consisted of John Drews III, Joe Luise, John Marino III, Leon Sayler and Keith Williams. Team 3 (Mixed), consisted of Danny Becker, Darryl Blasberg, Joe LoConte, Thomas Sternberg and John Strahm.
