Signal 13/35—Fireplace spreads to Wall

By Chief John Drews

On March 20th, 2005, the department was activated at 7:15am for a reported living room fire at 66 Plandome Rd.

Upon arrival, Captain E. Hudson (5A6-52), whose house is across the street, found the inside wall paneling on fire around the fireplace.

Ex-Chief J. McLoughlin (FM-7) arrived next and informed FIRECOM that it was a Signal 35. Prior to notification of a 35 FIRECOM was asked to activate Rocky Point for an engine to start responding. Due to limited manpower Rocky Point was requested prior to notification of the 35. Responding from work, I was advised by FIRECOM that FM-7 was on scene advising  a working fire. I requested Miller Place for an engine, Mt. Sinai for RIT and Terryville to standby.

One line was stretched from 5A6-9 and the crew combined with 5A6-1 and Rocky Point 5A7-3 contained the fire to the living room.  Crews brought tarps down and covered the homeowner’s computers while overhauling continued. Miller Place 5A9-5 crew has held in staging with Mt Sinai standing by as the RIT team.

Good job to the crew, who were able to limit the damage to just the living room and some water damage to the basement area.
