On Thursday, November 4th, 2004 at 0654 the Sound
Beach Fire Department was activated for a signal 13 at 286 Lower Rocky
Point Road, a private two story dwelling. Upon my arrival heavy smoke
was coming out of the basement windows.
A signal 13-35 was
transmitted and mutual aid requested from Rocky Point and Miller Place
for an engine each. Mount Sinai responded with their RIT (rapid
intervention team). 5A6-1 was ordered to lay a three-inch supply line
from a nearby hydrant and to stretch a 1¾ hand line to the basement and
conduct a primary search. FireCom advised that Rocky Point was
operating another alarm and would not be responding, Terryville was then
requested for an engine to the scene. While crews were extinguishing the
fire in the basement we determined that the fire had extended into the
bathroom and walls on the second floor.
Because of the extension of the fire and the about of items stored in
the basement an extensive overhaul operation was required. A signal 4
was transmitted at 0745. The fire is under investigation by the
Brookhaven Town Fire Marshall's Office. An occupant of the home was
transmitted to Mather Hospital by Miller Place's ambulance. An engine
from Port Jefferson and an ambulance from Rocky Point stood by at our
headquarters. All units were
back in service at 0918.
