Car Fire!

By Firefighter Darran Handshaw

At 1746 hrs the evening of 4/13/10 the Sound Beach Fire Dept was activated for a structure fire.  Chiefs arrived at the scene to find a basement fire fed by an LP gas line.   Chief Bill Rosasco (5A6-30) took command of the fire.  There was heavy fireload in the basement.  The first due pumper (5A6-1) stretched a line to the basement but was unable to knock down the main body of fire due to fire volume and basement layout.  Firefighters pulled the line to the top of the top of the stairs and held the stairs while Rocky Point's engine crew knocked the fire down from the Bilco doors at the side of the house.  Extensive overhaul was done by all companies to search for any fire extension in the house.  The homeowner was transported to the hospital for burns by ambulance (5A6-16) and was later released from the hospital.  Rocky Point, Mount Sinai and Miller Place were mutual aided for the fire.  One engine from Coram and one ambulance from PJVAC were called to stand by at Sound Beach headquarters.
